An exceptional early viola d'amore ( A REAL JEWEL of early instruments ), out of the estate of a professional musician in excellent playing condition for the: player, collector or lover of beautiful things.
This instrument as far as I can see is not signed and not labeled. It should be an early viola d'amore made in Italy or France ( covered eyes I understand is mostly a sign of French ). By the look of it to me, I beleive was made at the turn of the 19th century between 1780 and 1820. The material and workmanship is unsurpassable; very dense spruce for the top. beautiful tiger maple for the back. I beleive the sides. the scroll, the neck and the peg box are made of mahagonny. The condition is very good for the age; all I can see are some repairs to the top ( about 6 or 7 ). All well repaired and strong.( NO repair or crack near the soundpost or the bassbar. The varnish is original and shows some wear and some loss. The total length is 30 inches. The body length is 15 1/2 inches. The head and peg box are 8 1/2 inches. The string length is 13 1/2 inches. |
